Education in Nunavut takes many forms, including instruction of the official languages - Inuktitut, Innuinaqtun, English or French. Students learn traditional ways of life through communication with the Elders in both formal and informal ways.

Education is controlled by local education councils to assist in having traditional language and culture passed on while ensuring students can use their knowledge and skills in other jurisdictions.

Most students do not have to leave home to attend school, however not all communities yet have full courses to Grade 12. Post secondary and adult education programs are offered at the community level as well as at the Nunatta Campus of Nunavut Arctic College in Iqaluit.

Some visitors have had the opportunity to learn about life in arctic communities during Elderhostel or special summer programs.
