In 1999 the Inuit of the Nunavut area of Canada's Arctic will take on the responsibility of managing their own affairs, and those of the non-Inuit also living there. Through the the settlement of one of the largest land claim agreements in North America, and a non-violent separation of one jurisdiction from another, the Nunavut Territory will be born.

On July 9, 1993 the Government of Canada and representatives for the Inuit of Nunavut signed the Nunavut Act in Kugluktuk (Coppermine), Northwest Territories.

The Nunavut area covers almost 1/3 of Canada and is almost entirely above the treeline. Nunavut has a population of approximately 24,000 of whom 85% are Inuit (18,000).
