Arranging a Tour

For adventure-seeking visitors to Nunavut, tour operators and outfitters offer a wide range of excursions that include differing levels of services. Outfitters usually operate between March and September only, which is Nunavut's peak travel season. They can still be contacted in the off-season months to facilitate planning, however due to cold temperatures and reduced daylight, few travellers visit during this time of year. If you're already visiting a northern community and feel like taking a tour of the tundra or go on a fishing trip, check in with the hamlet office or with Hunters and Trappers Organization (HTO) – either will gladly refer you to a local licensed guide or outfitter.

• Tour Operators
Both northern and southern-based tour operators generally offer packages that may include any or all of the following: transportation to and within Nunavut, lodgings, meals, and excursions. Alternatively, they may refer you to an outfitter who will organize specific tours for you and supply you with the equipment and expert guidance you need for your stay in the region.

• Outfitters
Outfitters, which may be based in either the north or south, are individuals or companies that provide varying levels of services and equipment. Some locally based outfitters may provide only basic logistical services, such as transportation to and from a national or territorial park. Others offer complete packages such as dog-sledding expeditions or fishing trips to outpost camps, with meals, lodgings, and guide services included.

• Guides
Guides work for tour operators or outfitters and will accompany you on your northern travels. They provide logistical support, safety awareness, and often offer naturalist, cultural or historical interpretation. There are also professional sport hunting guides who accompany sportsman on very challenging Arctic hunting expeditions.
