Parks and Information Centres enable those visitors who want to hike and camp to more closely experience life on the land. Historical sites are also protected through the establishment of parks. Visitor Centres provide orientation for most of the parks and provide details on local activities, as well as information and insight into the area and its people.

ARVIAT


Margaret Aniksak Visitors' Centre. Tel: (819) 857-2698, or contact the Economic Development Officer: (819) 857-2941. Big white freeform building with interpretive displays, many constructed by the people of Arviat.


BAKER LAKE
Akumalik Visitors' Centre.
Tel: (819) 793-2456. Re-creation of a 1940s Hudson's Bay Company trading post in the original post building. Additional displays depict the culture of the Caribou Inuit, and the land and rivers of the Keewatin. Interactive displays, information on tours, and visits to the traditional Inuit camp.

Baker Lake Inuit Camp. A demonstration of the everyday activities of a traditional summer Inuit camp, caribou skin tents, family living in the traditional way. Location changes so check at the visitors' centre.


CAMBRIDGE BAY
Arctic Coast Visitors' Centre.
Interpretive displays on history, culture, arts and crafts, flora and fauna. Library of northern books and videos for visitor information. Open May - September daily. On request the rest of the year. Omingmak St. and Tigiganiak Rd., Cambridge Bay Tel: (403) 983-2224. Fax: (403) 983-2302. Overlooks the bay.

Cambridge Bay Historic Sites. Self-guided walking trail with interpretive signs.


CHESTERFIELD INLET
Chesterfield Inlet Historical Trail.
Walking trail with interpretive pamphlet and signs. Ask for pamphlet at Hamlet Office.


GJOA HAVEN
Northwest Passage Interpretive Trail.
Self-guided walking trail with interpretive signs. History of the Northwest Passage with major focus on the Amundsen story. Display of artifacts, tools and maps in the Hamlet office.


IQALUIT
Unikkaarvik. Baffin Regional Visitor Information Centre.
Tel: (819) 979-4636. Fax: (819) 979-1373. Displays depict the life and culture of the southern Baffin, including a life-size diorama of the floe edge above and below water, and larger than life size marble carving of a drum dancer. Advice on activities, events and attractions. Housed with regional library.

Qaummaarviit Historic Park. On an island in Frobisher Bay, 12 km east of Iqaluit. Occupied over 1000 years ago by the Thule Inuit who lived in villages and hunted the bowhead whale. There are remains of house foundations, tent rings and meat caches. Outfitters offer trips by snowmobile or dogteam and by boat in summer.


KUGLUKTUK (COPPERMINE)
Kugluktuk (Coppermine) Historic Sites.
Self-guided walking trail with interpretive signs.


PANGNIRTUNG
Angmarlik Visitors' Centre.
Tel: (819) 473-8737. Fax: (819) 473-8685. Museum in Pangnirtung with displays depicting the life of the Thule and modern Inuit, full-size model of the inside of a Thule house, arts and crafts, whaling industry. Information on operators and activities in the Pangnirtung area. Housed with local library and elder's drop-in centre where you can meet the elders and see carving and other activities.

Kekerten Historic Park. On Kekerten Island, 50 km south of Pangnirtung. Preserved site of whaling station active in the late 1800s. Foundations of warehouses, whaleboat slip, large cast iron "trypots" (rendering pots), interpretive sign system and booklet. Operators run snowmobile trips to Kekerten from Pangnirtung until mid-June and boat trips July 15 - late September.

Auyuittuq National Park Headquarters. Tel: (819) 473-8828. Fax: (819) 473-8612. Information services and displays about Auyuittuq National Park Reserve. Register here, and make arrangements for transportation to the park.

Pangnirtung Historic Buildings. Reconstruction of old whaling station with replicas of whaleboats, artifacts and displays of the period.


RANKIN INLET
Keewatin Regional Visitors' Centre.
Tel: (819) 645-5091, or contact the Regional Tourism Coordinator at (819) 645-5067. Located in the Siniktarvik Hotel. Historical displays feature the traditional clothing and lifestyle of the Thule and modern Inuit of the Keewatin. New display on the Knight Expedition.
