traveller's guide to Canada's Arctic.

One of the most astonishing events in Arctic nature occurs in the summer at a place where the land-fast ice meets the open sea -- the floe edge. The plankton begins to bloom and huge schools of shrimp and fish congregate followed by the seals and whales that feed on them. The magnificent polar bear follows haunting the ice floes hunting for seals.

Travellers who want the thrill of seeing their first polar bear, the rare humpback whale, the narwhal -- unicorn of the sea, the playful beluga, comical walrus or ringed, bearded or harp seal, must make this trek to the floe edge. Inuit guides will take visitors on guided snowmobile or dog sled tours to search for wildlife and icebergs. These trips usually include tours of the community and hotel stays before and after, and are often the crowning event of an Arctic visit.
